The premier event of the summer season is upon us! Carnival, now in its 40th year, is a tremendously entertaining and raucous celebration of the LGBTQ life and the best way to get there is by taking a Shoreline Aviation seaplane! Festivities start on Saturday, August 11th and go through Friday, August 17th with many fun events in between. Typically 90,000 visitors descend on P’Town every year to participate in all the gaiety. This year’s theme is Mardi Gras By the Sea, so I may be getting out my mermaid costume (although it is hard to dance on your tail).
The highlight of the week is the Parade which takes place on Thursday, the 16th starting at 3:00 p.m. from the Harbor Hotel and proceeding down Commercial Street to Franklin Street. It is a spectacle not to be missed. Large and small floats are designed by crews who express their creativity in celebration of Carnival. Other participants use self-propelled apparatus such as unicycles, skateboards, pull carts and roller blades. You can also sign up to walk or march in the parade individually or with a group.
The Opening Night Celebration Costume Party, “The Nights of Bacchus” takes place on Sunday, the 12th. Start at the Wave Bar with cocktails, followed by the Costume Contest. A coronation ceremony will be held poolside where the winners will receive their crowns and sashes, which they can show off at the parade later in the week. The party continues with dancing at P’Town’s largest waterfront club, the Paramount at the Crown and Anchor.
On Monday the 13th, take advantage of the Annual Rajin Cajun Carnival Pool Party. This usually sells out early, so buy your tickets ahead of time. This event is held at Brass Key Guesthouse on Bradford Street from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. On Monday night the 1st Annual Gesellschaft “King Cakes” will take place at Velvet. It’s a drag dance party presented by Janet Jorgulesco and House of La Rue to benefit Guild Hall. For those like me who don’t know the meaning of Gesellschaft, it is an association of individuals working to attain goals related to entertainment, intellectual or cultural purposes. I suspect entertainment will be the focus at this event.
Tuesday is the 30th Annual Voodoo Party from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the Watership Inn. Can you do that voodoo that you do so well? Let’s find out! Later in the day is Fat Tuesday: Boxers and Beads at the A-House where you can dance the night away from 10:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. On Wednesday, get your tickets for the Northern DecaDance event featuring Betty Who at Provincetown Town Hall. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. After the parade on Thursday, save some energy for The Poseidon at Purgatory Underwear Party from 10:30 p.m. – 1:00 a.m. at Club Purgatory.
The grand finale of Carnival is the Nights of Adonis Masquerade Dance Party which takes place at both Wave and Paramount from 9:00 p.m. to closing. The good news is you’ll have the rest of the weekend to recuperate from the festivities. Shoreline Aviation Seaplane Services can fly you to Carnival in Provincetown from New York City (flights depart at noon or 6:30 p.m. on Fridays) in plenty of time for the party, and take you back to the city on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. Call us at 800-468-8639 or book a seat online at shorelineaviation.com. Let the wild rumpus begin!
