For many years, Mark Futch, the doyen of seaplane operators in Florida, lived in Boca Grande on the southwestern coast of Florida – where the turquoise waters surround jeweled emerald islands such as Sanibel and Captiva. Mark is a local there and started out, as the other men in his family had, as a fishing guide, a pursuit he continues today with his charter boat Sitarah. He has spent 42 years guiding fisherman through the Boca Grande Pass and met many well-known anglers in the process. But Mark’s trues passion lies in aviation. Boca Grande Seaplane, which he started in 1987, became the premier seaplane operation in Southwest Florida, flying many guests, famous and not-so, to and from the islands and keys throughout the region.

Putting airplanes in saltwater greatly increases the cost of maintaining them. After Mark started his seaplane operation, he knew he would have to find a way to supplement his income. He registered himself with all the film companies and became a member of SAG, the Screen Actors Guild. You may have noticed that seaplanes appear frequently in movies, television and commercials. Mark has flown in many of those – demonstrating that seaplanes really are the most adventurous way to get anywhere.

Three years ago, Mark sold his company and retired. He still fished and guided, but his flying days were pretty much over. The new owners, stopped operating seaplanes and moved on to land-based aircraft and the folks on Florida’s west coast had to find a new way to get around.  A three-year retirement turned out to be enough for Mark. Now he’s back in action and working with Shoreline to provide seaplane service to the lovely islands near Boca Grande including Sanibel, Captiva and Useppa as well as the Florida Keys.

Mark is a man of many stories and vast experience. We’re happy to have him on board!

Happy travels-
