About ten years ago, Richard O’Such, an American Airlines captain who lives on Long Beach Island, NJ had the brilliant idea of starting seaplane service between NYC and LBI. He contacted Shoreline’s President, John Kelly, established a Private licensed seaplane base near Harvey Cedars, and arranged launch service from the seaplane to the Marina. Since then we have operated seasonal charter flights to LBI. This season, based on increasing demand, we will offer scheduled service to LBI on Friday afternoons at 5:15 p.m. with returns on Sunday nights also at 5:15 p.m. Charters flights will still be available. Flights take just 30 minutes.

Long Beach Island is a perfect summer destination. It consists of six unique towns all connected by 18 miles of white sand beaches. The picturesque town of Barnegat Light is located on the northern tip of the island where you’ll find the strategically located lighthouse and state park of the same name. At its southernmost point you’ll find Beach Haven, a great family destination with the Fantasy Island Amusement Park, the Thundering Surf Waterpark and miniature golf courses for children of all ages.

Those looking for a quiet relaxed summer experience should explore the quieter town of Harvey Cedars. The town grows significantly during the season as it offers many private rental properties with lovely water views. Many families return year after year to take advantage of having the bay on one side and the ocean on the other, all within walking distance.

Long Beach Township lies in the center of LBI and has the most land area of all the towns. Brant, Haven, North and Spray Beaches are part of the Township as well as the boat launch area known as High Bar Harbor. Loveladies and North Beach are the quieter sections of town whereas North Beach Haven and Brant Beach are considered the livelier areas of the Township. Summer concerts, free movies, yoga classes and art shows run regularly throughout the summer season. For a schedule of classes and events visit:

Surf City is both a day tripper’s or vacationer’s destination. The town’s boulevard offers many shops and restaurants to check out as well as a quiet bayside beach for little ones who might not appreciate a lot of wave action. Surf City Yacht Club, also on the bayside, has a marina and clubhouse which features weekly regattas and many programs for young people. It’s also one of the many places on Long Beach Island where you can book a wedding.

Ship Bottom is known as the “Gateway to Long Beach Island” as it has the only bridge connecting the island to the mainland over Manahawkin Bay via Route 72. There are many hotels and private rentals in the town, but this spot is also a popular destination for day-trippers looking to take in some sun on Bay Beach, try activities like fishing and crabbing from the pier, or surfing and paddle boarding at the beach. Grab the catch of the day at the Waterfront Park & Crabbing & Fishing Pier.

Each town has its own unique personality and you can spend the summer exploring them. Just keep in mind that you can be there in just 30 minutes from New York City on a Cape Air seaplane!

Happy travels-
